Trying to think of an engine in GM's US engine stable

That Chevy could use if they ever made a Sonic SS/Z-Spec.

The 2.0T is too powerful for the Sonic. (250HP, that's Focus ST levels of power.)

Uprated 1.4T? Eh, I doubt that could make 200 HP without having to do a lot of work.

They could go the NA route and shoehorn their 2.5L Ecotec in there, but that would probably be really big for the engine bay. If it would even fit at all.

They really don't have an engine right now that could be used. It wouldn't make financial sense to make a unique unit. I mean, it's not like the Fiesta ST's engine is a unique, it's out of the Fusion.

Sleeved 2.0T with a modified crank to skinny it up to 1.8. Probably around 200-220 hp and why the fuck do I care, not like I'm going to buy a GM product any time soon

The engine bay looks pretty cramped. I don't think a 2.0T or 2.5 would fit.

I think the solution is a pumped up 1.4 Ecotec. It already has a cast iron block, five main bearings, reinforced crank, and forged connecting rods. That's a pretty good start.

GM has a turbo 1.6, it's in the Corsa OPC/VXR 180hp if I recall. What's wrong with a 250hp B car?

That 1.6 probably isn't up to US regulations. Plus it'd be kinda silly to import an engine for one car.

250 horsepower would probably just turn this car into a torque steering pig. That would work for a Cruze SS, but probably not a Sonic.

I don't think it'd be that hard to make the 1.6L complaint with US regs, especially since the Cascada (which IIRC it is also used in) will be coming here soon (it was apparently shown to US dealers in the last few weeks).
